Tetsu Tsukemen

Location: Tetsu Tsukemen

Rating: Very good
Meal: Lunch for3
Price: 2600 yen
Payment: Credit cards accepted
Dishes: Tsukemen, ramen, brothless ramen
English Menu: No
Smoking:  No

Tetsu Tsukemen is a quite famous tsukemen (noodles dipped in concentrated broth) shop that happens to have a store in the food court of Lalaport Toyosu.  I noticed it last time we ate there and vowed to try the Tetsu tsukemen next time.

Ramen

My son opted for another restaurant, but my wife and I both wanted to try all 3 specialties, so I ordered 3 dishes even though we only needed 2.  Luckily my son was still peckish and helped us finish some of the noodles off, though I was still unpleasantly full when all was said and done.  2600 for 3 dishes is quite a good deal!

Tsukemen

I think my wife and I agreed that the tsukemen (their specialty) was the best dish.  They don't do the hot stone here like they do at their proper restaurants, which is understandable considering the food court setting.  I ran out of noodles for my broth and would have gone back for more, but luckily I had other dishes to use my broth with.  The tsukemen noodles were of middling thickness, just right for the broth.  The ramen dish had much thinner noodles, and the broth was thinner to of course.  My wife liked it all right, but I didn't think it held much of a candle to the tsukemen.  The last dish was intersting...an extremely thick, curly noodle, so chewy I found my mouth getting tired after a while.  There was no broth in the bowl, just toppings, while a separate small pitcher contained a very fatty mixture of...something...and a raw egg.  I mixed it all up and poured it over the noodles.  This kind of ruined the noodles.  Then I poured the rest of my tsukemen broth on it and tried to eat it.  It was no longer very good and got too cold.  I'm still not sure how to properly eat this dish.

Manna?

Overall we were quite pleased with the place...if only it wasn't always so crowded at lunch in the food court there!  Oh well...weekends at the mall...it will always be crowded.

Hukutai

Location: Hukutai

Rating: OK
Meal: Dinner for 2
Price: 1430 yen
Payment: Cash only
Dishes: Gomoku fried rice,  Pork and cabbage miso teishoku
English Menu: Yes
Smoking: Yes

It continues to amaze me that we haven't yet exhausted all the Chinese restaurants within walking distance.  Here is yet another spot, kind of a dive really, but the food was decent enough if average.  Large portions and cheap!  It's definitely more of a high Ok/low Very Good rating.

My son and I walked down to this place and ordered some of our typical favs, him preferring fried rice and often going with gomoku (or five ingredients) fried rice, and me going with the pork and cabbage miso stir fry teishoku.  My son's dish was to his liking and it tasted fine to me as well.  It was a huge mound of fried rice that he somehow managed to pack away.  I guess his 14 year old body is starting to need more energy to power it.  My teishoku was typical, with a large portion of the rather oily cabbage and pork stir fried with miso.  The side dishes were all very adequate.

On the whole, we both kind of liked the place, though it's not likely we'll get that far down the road again very often, although there is another Chinese restaurant about a block closer to us that we will have to review some day.

Guzman y Gomez

Location: Guzman y Gomez

Rating: OK
Meal: Lunch for 3
Price: 3400 yen
Payment: Credit cards accepted
Dishes: Spicy chicken burrito, chipotle pulled pork burrito, 2 orders of cheese quesadillas
English Menu: Yes
Smoking: No

We met some friends after church at Guzman y Gomez, an Australian Mexican chain with a store in Shibuya.  I had heard it wasn't particularly authentic Mexican, but good food.  I think Frijoles and Wahoos Tacos are better, but it is a bit cheaper here.  Ok overall.

Hard to make a burrito pretty...

Family Garden

Location: Family Garden

Rating: Not great
Meal: Dinner for 3
Price: 4449 yen
Payment:  Credit cards accepted
Dishes: Pizza (of some kind), spaghetti carbonara, shrimp macaroni, sesame grilled chicken set
English Menu: Yes
Smoking: No

Located at "The Quad" as I've taken to calling it, Family Garden is one of 4 restaurants all in the same block, a bit down the road from us towards Uraga (but still pretty much part of Yokosuka proper).  Definitely a driving destination, there is a big parking lot shared by all 4 restaurants.  I've reviewed one before (Kalbi House), and there are 2 left go.

Family Garden is a typical western food family style restaurant, and not a very good one at that.  I was surprised to find myself recalling our last meal at Jonathan's and thinking Family Garden did not compare very well.  So that put it at an automatic Not Great rating.

None of the dishes are worth commenting on, so I'll just leave the pictures here:

Pizza was super thin and lacking in flavor

Hard to go wrong with spaghetti carbonara

This was not very good, shrimp macaroni

Grilled chicken with sesame sauce...not bad

Japanese style set option available..the clam miso was good

Rin

Location: Rin

Rating: OK
Meal: Dinner for 2
Price: 2690 yen
Payment: Credit cards accepted
Dishes: Gomoku fried rice, black fried rice, szechuan cashew chicken
English Menu: Yes
Smoking: No (maybe)

The chinese restaurant Rin is distinctive due to its circular entrance and fancy atmosphere.  It is, however, mediocre, servers small portions, and overcharges for them.

They do take credit cards though.

And that's about all I have to say about it.

*** Update 6/27/2017***

Looks like this place has closed and been replaced by a ramen shop.

***

I couldn't tell from the outside that it was an izakaya or else I probably wouldn't have bothered.  But I did, and once I got accustomed to the second hand smoke, I ordered some food off of the wall.  The menu is a bunch of colored pieces of paper, all in Japanese.  It's always a gamble, so I ordered a couple of  interesting dishes (fried octopus, clams) and then went for an old standby, the fried rice.  The first two dishes were passable, but the fried rice was pretty good.

Not a bad spot, but not great either, I give this place an Ok.

Ryuo

Location: Ryuo

Rating: Very good
Meal: Lunch for 2
Price: 1500 yen
Payment: Cash only (vending machine)
Dishes: Lunch special (tonkotsu ramen and 3 gyoza), Roasted garlic tonkotsu ramen
English Menu: Yes

Well this was a nice surprise!  My wife and I were out on our bikes on Saturday for lunch and were hunting for something new when we came across a new ramen restaurant on 16.  It's located just before Tajima (another good ramen spot) and must have opened fairly recently as we had never seen it before.

It's a small, plain place, with sit down seating, unlike the usual bar style.  You have to get your ticket at the vending machine, but they have an English menu and it appears that the staff will help you with your order if you can't read the button labels.

My wife got a lunch set with plain tonkotsu ramen and 3 gyoza.  I got what was translated as "burnt garlic tonkotsu" ramen (funny how "roasted" sounds so much better in English, yet means roughly the same thing).  Both of us chose the thick noodles and I got a soy sauce egg topping.

Unusually, they put a large container with several toppings on our table for us to liberally apply to our ramen when it arrived.  There was shredded negi, corn, and what I found out was some kind of mushroom shredded into strips that tasted like pasta.  Also kimchi.

We quite liked the broth, which wasn't as heavy as tonkotsu can sometimes be, and we appreciated the change.  Mine had a nice burnt garlic flavor to it that was quite noticeable.  My wife liked her plainer broth as well.  Both of us loved the thick, chewy noodles.

It's always fun to discover a new ramen spot, especially when it turns out to be good!

Jonathan's

Location: Jonathan's

Rating: OK
Meal: Dinner for3
Price: 5280 yen
Payment: Credit cards accepted
Dishes: Sukiyaki teishoku, tandoori chiken with mexican pilaf, margarita pizza, foie gras pizza, drinks
English Menu: Yes

Ah Jonathan's, the perpetual butt of jokes.  Another of several chains of "western food" "family" restaurants, Jonathan's is one of those places we only eat at if we can't find anything else.  This time, it was because of New Year's Day, and there was nothing else open.

Luckily, we were quite pleased with the food we had, recognizing it's inherent mediocrity.  I liked my sukiyaki teishoku and my wife liked her tandoori chicken with mexican pilaf.  My son's pizza wasn't his favorite though.  I also tried their special foie gras pizza, which was meh (to be expected).

It was New Years so we got some sake and a highball, which contributed significantly to the price above.

For some reason I'm missing some pictures.  They may still be on my phone so I'll check for them later.

Kamakura Pasta

Location: Kamakura Pasta

Rating: OK
Meal: Lunch for 2
Price: 2678 yen
Payment: Credit cards accepted
Dishes: Prosciutto and asparagus fettuccine, Sukiyaki spaghetti
English Menu: Yes

My wife and I had lunch out at More's City the other day and selected Kamakura Pasta to eat at.  They are mainly a pasta and bread restaurant.  We just got the pasta this time for lunch.  My wife opted for a prosciutto and asparagus fettuccine, while I went for the sukiyaki spaghetti.  Both were fine, but unremarkable.
